A completed source-corpus review of interruption, silence, overlap, timing, correction, accessible recovery, and human handoff.
Headline finding
This completed eight-source review found that conversational recovery is not simply another prompt after silence. Interruption, simultaneous speech, an incomplete utterance, a recognition mismatch, a caller pause, relay delay, and a disconnect require different evidence and different recovery. W3C's timing guidance says users should generally be able to turn off, adjust, or extend a time limit, subject to stated exceptions 2. ADA guidance says the communication method depends on the nature, length, complexity, context, and person's usual method 5. Applied cautiously to voice interaction, the corpus supports adjustable pacing, explicit error notice, repeat and correction paths, non-speech alternatives, and human handoff.
All 8 sources were reviewed: 4 addressed interaction controls, 3 addressed accessible communication, and 1 addressed governance. No private call cohort, recorded dialogue, interruption event, recovery rate, caller outcome, or operational result was measured. Corpus coverage is the only completed count.
Research question
What source-backed controls help a virtual assistant recover when conversational turns fail, and which conclusions require a defined call sample? The practical unit is a recovery episode beginning when expected turn progress becomes uncertain and ending in resumed progress, a chosen alternative, human transfer, caller exit, technical termination, or unresolved evidence. The review does not infer impatience, disability, language ability, or intent from latency or speech pattern.
Methodology
The corpus was frozen on August 17, 2026. Eight authoritative pages addressed voice access, timing, errors, feedback, effective communication, relay, public-service accessibility, or AI risk. The primary unit was one document. Product demonstrations, synthetic call claims, and unauthoritative advice were excluded.
Seven codes were fixed: time control, input alternative, error identification, state feedback, accommodation, recovery choice, and governance. A code required explicit source language. Counts use 8 as the denominator. Web criteria were treated as design evidence, not asserted as requirements for every telephone flow. No calls or audio were evaluated.

Evidence interpretation
Four of 8 sources principally support timing, error, input, or status controls. Three of 8 principally support effective communication, relay, or accessibility evaluation. One of 8 provides risk governance. These categories are analytical assignments, not votes. WCAG success criteria directly address web content and are used here as transparent design tests. They do not produce a universal silence duration, interruption threshold, or acceptable retry count for voice calls.
The sources support distinct event classes. A caller interruption means caller speech begins while the assistant is speaking. Overlap means both speech streams are active, but does not reveal who intended to yield. Silence means no detected speech during a defined window, but may reflect thought, mute, network loss, relay pacing, or detection failure. Mismatch means captured content conflicts with expected input. Disconnect is a channel event. Collapsing them into “no response” prevents meaningful analysis.
A recovery chain should preserve at least seven states: trigger class, assistant state when triggered, caller content retained, recovery notice, option offered, caller selection, and final disposition. Useful dispositions include resumed at same step, resumed at earlier step, corrected field, alternate input, human handoff, caller declined, abandoned, technical failure, and evidence unavailable. The denominator for any future recovery proportion should be all eligible trigger episodes under one frozen interaction version, not only successful retries.
Decision boundaries
A human conversation owner should approve silence windows, interruption behavior, what input is retained, maximum retry logic, accessibility alternatives, handoff destinations, and fail-safe treatment of consequential requests. A virtual assistant may pause, acknowledge interruption, read back uncertain content, offer choices, and route to a person. It should not scold the caller, infer a diagnosis or emotion, or force faster speech.
Safety, healthcare, legal, financial, identity, complaint, and consent interactions need an authorized specialist when recovery leaves material uncertainty. A human accessibility owner should review relay behavior and accommodation requests, without inferring need from voice characteristics.
Limitations
This purposive corpus contains broad accessibility and risk guidance rather than a shared telephone-dialogue dataset. Several W3C findings concern visual or programmatic web interfaces and require careful translation to audio. FCC relay descriptions do not establish that a particular system interoperates with all relay modes. No authority in the sample sets one preferred pause length.
No private recording, transcript, speech marker, interruption, retry, transfer acceptance, or caller report was reviewed. Network conditions, background sound, code-switching, speech disability, and relay use can alter classification. The synthesis cannot establish usability, recovery accuracy, satisfaction, or causation.
Reproducibility
A repeat reviewer can retrieve the eight numbered sources, freeze access dates and versions, and code one document per row for the seven criteria. Keep the exact section and quotation for each positive code. Calculate principal-role counts over a denominator of 8 and disclose overlap. Mark the web-to-voice translation as analyst interpretation rather than wording from the source.
A later empirical study should publish the eligible-call rule, dialogue and prompt version, audio sampling unit, speech-activity settings, trigger definitions, retained-input rule, disposition codebook, relay flag, reviewer agreement, exclusions, and unavailable count. Episode and call denominators should be reported separately. That procedure states future evidence requirements. No private call cohort or operational result was measured here.
