Finding and scope

ITU-T E.123 describes notation for telephone numbers, and NIST and W3C materials support accurate, correctable data entry. These sources do not establish that a particular spoken chunking pattern prevents call-center transcription errors. This article specifies a local test and reports no operating result.

Evidence base

ITU-T Recommendation E.123 covers presentation of telephone numbers. NIST SP 800-63B discusses requirements around telephone-based authentication channels, underscoring that number possession and identity are distinct. W3C input-assistance guidance addresses error identification and correction. They provide design context, not comparative call-center evidence.

Proposed method

During a fixed period, randomly assign eligible intake calls to the current approved readback or a chunked readback with pauses matching the locally displayed number format. Compare the saved number with a separately verified source supplied through an approved channel. Exclude calls without an independent reference and report exclusions.

Prespecify the primary outcome as at least one incorrect saved digit. Secondary measures can include corrections during readback, added handling time, caller repetition, and completed callbacks. Stratify cautiously by international prefix, extension, audio-quality flag, and caller correction if counts support it.

Inference limits and decision boundary

Fewer transcription errors would not prove the number belongs to the caller, that consent exists, or that a callback will connect. Small samples may remain imbalanced by agent or audio quality. Assistants may confirm captured digits under policy, but must not treat number accuracy as identity verification.

Limitations

The reference source can be wrong, and excluding unverifiable calls can bias results. Local numbering conventions may not transfer internationally. Monitoring may change agent behavior. The study does not establish fraud prevention, legal compliance, or the best approach for every accessibility need.
